Carrying at a huge religious event |
|
Jul 09, 2008 - 12:25 AM - by exactlymypoint

I am going to be volunteering at what promises to be a huge evangelical event here in Portland. (Portland CityFest 08) There are going to be tens of thousands of people and I am going to be right dab smack in the middle of it.
The question is, do I carry at this event? My main concerns are
1. Pick pocket types
2. Bumping into people constantly
3. It may be very hot
4. Hugging people as I am going to be a counselor.
5. Fatigue
And probably a few others that I can not think of.
And of course to complicate things, because traffic is going to be obnoxious, I will probably take mass transit to the downtown area where it is being staged. We all know what types frequent there.
It is a dilemma and I would like to get your opinions.

Okay, will I or will I not get my permit?
I'll try to make this quick, but it's quite funny (dumb luck)...
So I go through the Oklahoma Self Defense Act training, pay the $200 for the course and then the fees on top of that for the OSBI background check. Just after applying for my permit, I get offered a job in Washington. Had to move, and wouldn't you know it... just got a letter today that my permit was sent to the local S.O. only 2 days after we moved from Oklahoma !!!!!
So, I have a permit sitting in Norman, OK at the local S.O. and no way to obviously get back there to pick up in person. I'm hoping that someone in the office will understand and perhaps mail it here to Washington, but not sure how that works.
Thoughts ???

9 Days without my pistol. |
|

Well we just got back this weekend from a trip up north to visit both of our families. This required us to stay for a bit over a week in both IL, and WI. Neither of which as you all know are freindly to carrying firearms for personal protection.
After the first day of traveling through TX, AR, and MO, and staying just south of St. Louis and carrying as usual, I was forced on the second day to remove the magazine, round from the chamber, put it back in the magazine, then place the pistol, (actually 2 of them for the trip) into a zippered case and zip it up with the magazine ouside of the case. Both of them were placed in a compartment just above my head in the motorhome, but not really within any sort of reach, for fast access or anything, at least while I was driving. This is where the remained for the next 9 days.
It was really strange, going into stores, sitting around the campsite, going to restaurants, and getting dressed/undressed every day... [Read More]

had to display my gun to daughter and friends |
|
Jul 08, 2008 - 10:26 AM - by GOPony

Ok my daughter is 20 and had two friends staying for a week. They all wanted to ride in the mustang to go out to dinner. They all piled in (not easy to get in and out from the back), I got in and then realized that my spare gun was in the middle console (I occasionally do leave my backup in my car that is in the garage and locked). Knowing that i was going to be drinking a couple i wanted to get it out. So I told them sorry if you don't like guns but i have to remove one so we can go play in the mustang.
Now considering on of the "friends" likes my daughter and it is a guy, there may have been some benefit to doing this :), but none the less it was the first time i have had to show, display or anything since CCW
I am sure i will get hit about leaving gun in the car, but frankly with the garage locked, the car locked, the console locked and with the house and car alarm active this is probably the least accessible gun i have.
Of... [Read More]

Am I vigilant or paranoid? |
|
Jul 08, 2008 - 8:39 AM - by Kaymen

When does being alert and ready cross over to being paranoid and jumpy? Is there such a thing as being too quick? Let me relate two incidents that have happened to me in the last few months. The first was one in the middle of the night I was sound asleep, but I heard a noise that was out of place and it woke me up, with no conscious thought on my part or at least none that I remember, I came fully awake and realized I was standing next to my bed with my weapon in my hand at a low ready. I knew my wife was asleep in our bed and my infant son was next to her. I then proceeded to check our home and insure it was secure. I never found the source of the noise.
The second, I had just came home from work, it was late a little after midnight, my wife who does not like to be home alone was at her parents house and was due home shortly. I walked into the house and laid my keys and phone on the couch, then heard something fall it sounded like it came from the... [Read More]

N.C. CC applications increase |
|
Jul 07, 2008 - 9:52 PM - by Blue
|
Several articles on TV Saturday and Sunday that Concealed Carry applications are up drasticaly in North Carolina. They stated that applications were up by 50% in Forsyth County over this time last year. They cited the economy and an increase in both violence and home invasions as the main reasons.
They did not mention that NC is a target state for illegal immigrants as there is very little trouble involved in getting a drivers license. Gang violence is on the rise to the point that Greensboro Police has started a "Gang Unit." There have been several killings related to MS-13, one involving innocent people who happened to be in a restaurant at the wrong time.
They said that the wait was growing due to the back log of applications. When I applied for mine some time ago, you had to take the class, get an appointment with the Sheriffs office to make the application (which at the time was a 5 week wait), then they had to either issue or deny... [Read More]
